The University Woman’s Club (UWC) began in 1913 as an auxiliary of the University YMCA, supporting students and faculty through service projects like improving the University Infirmary. In 1924, it became an independent organization, electing officers and initiating meetings, social events, and service efforts. Although the club saw a brief decline during the Great Depression, it was revitalized in 1935 and adopted its first bylaws in 1936. In subsequent years, UWC contributed to campus beautification, historical preservation, and patriotic initiatives.
In 1948, reflecting the growing Athens community and university, UWC shifted its focus toward social and educational enrichment. Interest Groups were introduced—starting with music, reading, gardening, and sewing—and have expanded to reflect members' diverse passions. The club also began hosting luncheons, dinners, travel events, and other social gatherings. Major milestones include the adoption of an official crest during the 50th anniversary (1974–75), bylaws revision opening membership to all women affiliated with UGA (2001-02), and amendment allowing men to join as associate members (2016-17).
Planning for the club’s 100th anniversary began in 2023 and was led by a special committee which included Chair Evelyn Winstead, Sylvia Byrd, Kim Argo, Karen Baldwin, Trina von Waldner, Lisa McMichael, Cyndi Clark and Mitzi Poole. The theme, “A Century of Commitment, A Lifetime of Impact,” guided a yearlong celebration launched at the 2024 Fall Coffee at the Botanical Gardens. Throughout the year the club celebrated UWC’s rich history through stories, service projects, archival displays, and pictures from the past filled our newsletter.
The Centennial Celebration culminated in a festive luncheon on April 8, 2025, at the Athens Country Club, with a commemorative video featuring interviews with sixteen members. Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz issued a proclamation recognizing UWC’s lasting contributions to the community. A centennial scholarship drive encouraged over 70% of members to donate during the year.
For over a century, the University Woman’s Club has fostered friendship, intellectual engagement, and community service—connecting members to one another and to the University of Georgia through meaningful programs, networking opportunities, and a commitment to empowering women through education and leadership.
