Topic: Active Learning Strategies
Dr. Leah Carmichael is leading the implementation of a five-year, $6 million campus-wide initiative to promote and enhance the use of active learning strategies in the undergraduate classroom as part of UGA’s Quality Enhancement Plan. Dr. Carmichael is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of International Affairs. In the International Affairs Department, she teaches courses on global issues, international law, international political economy, and special topics, including issues of geostrategic competition in the Arctic and food as a weapon of war.
The UWC 2025-26 Budget Proposal will be presented for acceptance.

Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning
Topic: Excellence in Teaching
Dr. Mittelstadt is an affiliate faculty member of the Louise McBee Institute of Higher Education at the University of Georgia. As Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, she leads university efforts associated with educational development of faculty and graduate teaching assistants, classroom AV and IT technology, learning technologies, instructional media services, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Dr. Mittelstadt serves as director of the Senior Teaching Fellows program, co-director of the Lilly Teaching Fellows program, chair of the Sarah H. Moss Fellowship, and chair-elect of the University System of Georgia Regents Advisory Committee on Teaching and Learning.

Speaker: Dr. Shannon O’Brien Brooks, Director, Office of Service-Learning
Topic: UGA’s Service Learning Initiatives
Dr. Brooks has served as the founding director of the Office of Service-Learning (OSL) at the University of Georgia since 2005 where she provides leadership, support and vision for enhancing UGA’s service-learning initiatives and its community-campus engagement. She received her BFA from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She holds a M.Ed. in instructional technology (2001) and a Ph.D. in art education (2006), both from the University of Georgia. Prior to leading the OSL, Shannon worked in UGA’s Office of Instructional Support & Development (now the Center for Teaching and Learning) and Cooperative Extension .

Office for Student Success and Achievement
Topic: Bulldog Basics and Student Success
Dr. Cara Simmons is the staff director of Bulldog Basics, a campus-wide initiative, which provides free toiletry and personal care items to students via an eStore. She serves as Director of the Office for Student Success and Achievement (OSSA) and coordinates several programs and services that promote student learning and success. Her portfolio includes federally funded TRIO programs, peer education, academic coaching, instruction, scholar programs, student success workshops, retention, and the support of first-generation and rural students UGA. Dr. Simmons leads a team of over 50 staff, faculty, and graduate students, and several hundred under-graduate student employees, who are all committed to student learning and development

Director of Domestic Field Study
Topic: Immersive Learning at UGA
Dr. Kaitlin Farrell first got involved in domestic field programs while pursuing her Ph.D. in the Odum School of Ecology at UGA. After teaching two ecology courses as part of the UGA Interdisciplinary Field Program, Kait was convinced that these types of immersive, off-campus courses offered unique and transformational experiential learning opportunities for students as well as course instructors. She has continued her involvement with IFP ever since. As the director of DFS, Kait supports current programs collaborates with faculty and staff across campus to develop and launch new US-based study away programs. She works to expand the visibility of DFS programs across campus and increase student participation in DFS programs.
